Local Lion added to naming registry
Longtime Lions Club member Don Westman is now on the City of Fort Saskatchewan’s list of those to get a park, road, neighbourhood or civic building named in their honour.
City Council gave approval Tuesday to include Westman on the official City Naming Registry list.
Westman worked 31 years as a corrections officer at the Fort Saskatchewan Correctional Facility, and has been a member of the Lions Club since 2001. He served on City Council for 15 years from 1998 through to 2013.
A strong advocate for local history, he was instrumental in getting the reproduction of the 1875 mounted police fort built. He has also supported the expansion of the campground in Turner Park, both while on City Council and as a Lion.
His other accomplishments include the handivan service, which he helped the Lions take over.
“I have found Don to be heavily invested in moving our community forward and his efforts should be recognized by the community,” said Mayor Gale Katchur.
Placement on the City Naming Registry does not guarantee that the name will be used. Four names on the registry have recently been used. The new Heartland Housing building was named in honour of former mayor Muriel Abdurahman. A park in SouthPointe was named in honour of former Mayor Ken Hodgins. Former city worker Peter Schmidt had a public works shop named after him. And local volunteer Leslie MacMillan had a new park named after her last year.
Other names on the registry not yet used include former mayor Jim Sheasgreen, former MLA Walter Buck, former City Council members Allan Jamha and Tami Petroski, dentist Winstcn Alexander Johnstone and local volunteer Raymond Truscott.
