New pet bylaw finally approved
Fort Saskatchewan's new "Responsible Pet Ownership" bylaw received final approval Tuesday.
The bylaw was expected to be approved by City Council on Nov. 12, but was held up when Councillor Brian Kelly refused to give the necessary unanimous approval to hold a third and final bylaw vote in a single meeting.
Kelly objected to the failure of the bylaw to address stray feral cats. The bylaw does increase the fine for owners of stray cats or dogs to $200, but does not deal with feral cats.
The fine for allowing a restricted dog to stray was also doubled and is now $1,000.
The new bylaw also eliminates pet licences. Dogs and cats are instead required to carry a tag listing the owner's phone number.
Chickens are still not allowed, nor any other form of poultry, horses, cattle, sheep, swine, goats, donkeys, mules, poisonous snakes, poisonous reptiles, or poisonous insects. Bees are allowed upon obtaining a special permit.
