No fireworks for New Year’s Eve
A proposal for a New Year's Eve fireworks show was quashed by City Council last week.
Councillor Patrick Noyen proposed asking staff to study the possibility of a fireworks show, including costs. But Council turned him down.
A New Year's Eve celebration was held in Fort Saskatchewan by a volunteer group in 2016. Fireworks were part of the 2017 event, thanks to a donation from Straightline Chrysler.
But bitterly cold weather also forced the 2017 event to take place mostly indoors. There were no fireworks at the 2018 event. The family-orientated event ended at 8 p.m.
Lack of volunteers caused the group to disband in 2019.
Mayor Gale Katchur was one of those voting against Noyen's proposal, saying she didn't feel the project was a good use of staff time.
"I really, honestly believe our staff deserve a break at New Year's Eve," she said.
The Canada Day fireworks display costs $12,500 a year, City Council was told. A bigger show is planned for this Canada Day to celebrate the 150th birthday of Fort Saskatchewan.
